Acidification: How It Arises And What Helps

Acidification can be responsible for a variety of symptoms such as fatigue and headaches. But how does acidification arise in the first place and what helps against it?

In case of acidification, the body’s natural acid-base balance is disturbed. This can be determined by the so-called ph-value in the arterial blood. A value between 7.36 and 7.44 is considered stable. If the value is below 7.36, it is called acidification.

The role of buffer systems

When we supply energy to the body in the form of food, it is made usable by metabolic processes. This results in basic and acidic waste products, which are normally excreted again. So-called buffer systems are responsible for this. They ensure that the ph-value in the arterial blood remains stable and that acids and bases are balanced. There are three types of them:

  • Breathing compensation
  • Kidney balance
  • chemical buffering

Normally, the body tries to excrete acidic metabolic waste products through the kidney or lungs. If the acid level is too high, however, this puts a strain on the metabolism and the organs – kidney stones can occur, the bone substance is attacked. This is because the body draws minerals from these, which act as a buffer against the excess acid.

Causes of acidosis

Depending on the cause, there are two forms of acidification. It can be both metabolic and breath-related.

Metabolic-related acidification

In metabolic azidosis, the concentration of metabolic products in the blood is too high, which reduces the ph-value. This can even be life-threatening! The cause is, for example, an increased acid formation in the body by:

  • Diabetes
  • Alcoholism
  • Poisoning
  • Shock

Respiratory acidification

If breathing is disturbed, for example due to asthma, breathing-related acidosis may occur. Too little carbon dioxide (CO2) is exhaled. The excess carbon dioxide then accumulates in the body. Symptoms may include:

  • Lack
  • blue colored lips
  • (in the worst case) Coma

How else does acidification manifest itself?

If we are acidified, the following symptoms may occur:

  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Appetite
  • Nausea
  • Joint pain
  • weakened immune system
  • low blood pressure

Deacidification as a treatment

Durch eine basenreiche Ernährung lässt sich der Säure-Basen-Haushalt wieder ins Gleichgewicht bringen. Und für die Figur tut eine basische Ernährung auch gleich noch etwas – denn besonders Obst und Gemüse bilden Basen im Körper. Nur in Maßen genießen solltest du stattdessen eiweißreiche Lebensmittel wie Fleisch- und Milchprodukte. Das Verhältnis von basischen zu säurehaltigen Lebensmitteln sollte bestenfalls etwa 3:1 sein.

The second pillar of deacidification is movement. Not only does it stimulate metabolism in general, sweat also ensures that more acid is excreted. Ideally we should move three times a week for at least 30 minutes
